Take action on Wednesdays: build support for the strike!

In February and March UCU members will strike again over pay inequality, job insecurity, rising workloads and pay devaluation – this time with 14 new universities joining them.

Last term, we joined staff on picket lines and demos, occupied our universities and blockaded management offices in support of the strike.

This term, we plan to escalate and spread student support for the strikes and its demands – on our campuses and nationally.

Our universities are being run like businesses, competing with each other to attract more students and make more money, resulting in year after year of increasingly casualised workforces, job cuts, and course closures. So far this year, the University of Sunderland has announced it will close its humanities courses as they are not deemed “financially sustainable” subjects. SOAS plan to cut research leave and sack all non-permanent staff. And Goldsmiths will be making cuts of 10-15% over the next two years.

Every Wednesday starting 5 February we are calling for students to take action on campuses in support of the strike demands, against the cuts, and for the reversal of marketisation, the abolition of fees, and for a fully-funded public education system paid for by taxing the rich.
